The elephant has a strong history of symbolism in the East. Traditionally the elephant was the animal that carried princes and noblemen. It came to be a symbol for status, strength and foresight. Because of its longevity it also has been associated with wisdom and dignity in old age. In Buddhism, the white elephant is sacred and stands for the Buddha's patience, wisdom and long memory. To the Chinese, the animal represented cosmic energy because of its strength and power.
